The main purpose of the Checklist is to provide a practical tool to assess the environmental impacts which projects may bring about. It is intended for use by engineers and planners who are not necessarily specialists in the environmental sciences.

ENCHECK
The software package, ENCHECKis an organiser that enables the user to make more effective and rapid use of the ICID Checklist procedure. It has the following characteristics and facilities:

• Structure based on the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage Checklist.
  
• The same questions, topics and numbering system as used in the Checklist.
  
• Repository for information connected with the study.
  
• Specific questions linked to topics relevant to identification of environmental effects.
  
• Collating system with various views on the information stored.
  
• Indicators showing the progress of the study.
  
• Production of the Checklist results table.
  

• Facility to write an initial report based on findings.
  
• Comprehensive on-line help on how to use the Checklist and software.
  
• Easy transfer of information to printer, ASCII file or word processor.
  
• Bibliography of relevant references, both English and French. Additional references can be entered by the user.

The software comes with a manual which guides the user through installation, running the program, problems which may occur and the various ENCHECK windows and commands.
