The International Programme for Technology and Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID) promotes and enhances research in irrigation and drainage in Developing Countries. This project followed up the R4815 IPTRID Networking Project and provided for a number of technical inputs on behalf of the project as well as support for the continuation of IPTID Network activities. This project has recently been superseded by R7201.



Executive Summary
Objectives

  • Purpose
    To support IPTRID in promoting investment in research and development in irrigation and drainage and in promoting the application of research results in developing countries.

  • Outputs
    1. Research and development proposals in irrigation prepared, potential donors targeted and appropriate monitoring and evaluation mechanisms identified, in collaboration with relevant countries and the IPTRID Secretariat.

    2.Awareness of research needs in irrigation and drainage maintenance, operations and environmental issues raised through the publication and popularisation of well researched issue papers.

    3.Technical advice and needed information provided to national research organisations and field professionals carrying out targeted investigations and activity oriented international group actions organised using the Internet, in collaboration with USBR, ILRI, Cemagref and ICID.

    4.IPTRID country and regional organisations assisted to build liaison between researchers and professionals both nationally and internationally. Arrangements finalised with ICID to take on responsibility and leadership for IPTRID Networking.

  • Methodology

    Output 1 - R&D Proposals:

    A) Joint preparation mission carried out for a new AfDB-funded project on the Intermediate Reuse of Drainage-water in Egypt

    B) Joint preparation mission carried out to Pakistan in response to local request for technical assistance on a new project on salinity management in the Indus basin.

    C) Assisted in preparation of technical cooperation exercise between Morocco, Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia on reuse of wastewater.

    D) Project proposal preparation mission was sent to South Africa to follow up discussions with DWAF in which the need for water quality monitoring was prioritised.

    E) Discussions were carried out with respect to a proposed project on drainage maintenance.

    Output 2 - Issues Papers:

    A) IPTRID Issues Paper No 1 "Poverty reduction and irrigated agriculture" was completed, and has been widely distributed by FAO.

    B) IPTRID Issues Paper No 2 "Realising the value of irrigation systems maintenance" was completed.

    C) IPTRID Issues Paper No 3 "Priorities for Agricultural Drainage" is being completed jointly.

    D) Water Resource Occasional Paper No 5 "Case Studies for Water Resources Planning" was completed and published by DFID. This was a synthesis of lessons learned from the work carried out by HR under project R6061.

    E) Strategy Paper was prepared on KAR Theme 5, "Water for Sustainable Food Production and Rural Development" (in consultation with IH, BGS, WELL and other professionals).

    Output 3 - Technical advice:

    A) GRID magazine numbers 11, 12 and 13 were prepared by HR, and printed and distributed using IPTRID Secretariat funds. GRID 12 and 13 were printed and distributed by FAO as part of their contribution towards the IPTRID Programme.

    B) A thematic network on maintenance was initiated, but will not be fully implemented until the IPTRID Communications Officer is appointed.

    C) The IPTRID Internet web-site, which is maintained at HR as part of this project was updated. A major step was to install a downloadable version of the "Checklist on Small-scale irrigation in Sub-Saharan Africa (DFID Project R6518) on the site.

    D) The IPTRID Web services were uprated.

    Output 4 - Support to IPTRID Secretariat:

    A) Considerable input was provided to assist in the transfer of the IPTRID Secretariat to its new institutional home at FAO, Rome, from the World Bank, and in the preparation of its new core programme.

    B) IPTRID was represented at the ICID Conference in Indonesia to report its progress to ICID members. It also provided support for the Workshop on the "Use of Saline Water for Irrigation".

    C) Arrangements were made for the transfer of the IPTRID Text Delivery Service to ICID headquarters in New Delhi were made and are currently being implemented.

    D) A new initiative using IPTRID Secretariat seed-corn funds has been launched to encourage the consolidation of existing Country Networks and to establish new ones.

    List of Publications
