Executive Summary
Objectives
Purpose
To increase awareness and to provide basic understanding of selected environmental issues for developing country engineers.
Outputs
1. A guide on evolving appropriate soil conservation strategies published.
2. A guide on assessing agro-chemical pollution in developing countries published.
3. A guide on the use of marginal quality water for agriculture published.
Methodology
Drafting of the guides on soil conservation strategies (output 1) and use of marginal quality water (output 3) were completed in March and April 1997 respectively and sent out in Draft form for external review. Reviewers in UNEP, IPTRID (World Bank) and the Stockholm Environment Institute were approached. Comments were received finally in August 1997. Revisions based on the comments were incorporated into the Guides and these were published in October 1997 as "Planning Soil Conservation Projects through Participation: A Guide", report No. OD 139 (HR Report) and "The Safe Use of Marginal Quality Water in Agriculture: A Guide for the Water Resource Planner", report No. OD140 (HR Report). The third guide was delayed and finally published at he end of 1997 as "Agrochemical Pollution Risks Associated with Irrigation in Developing Countries", report OD141 (HR Report).

Results
The three Guidelines were completed and have been disseminated. It is too early to report on the demand for these Guides or record the response of readers. Comments from external reviewers have been generally favourable.
Conclusions
The Guides are aimed at development professionals, policy advisers and technical staff in the water sector. Reviewers comments include: "The guide has an approach that is very much in the line with what has been developing for projects as a result of the UNCED-process. It emphasizes a holistic and bottom-up approach which is very good", "It is fairly comprehensive, easy to read and well structured and laid out, probably just what a water resource planner needs". Despite early indications by UNEP that they would publish one or more of these in their Environment Series, this did not materialize owing to UNEP's budgetary problems.
